Can we deny the life-changing impact of artificial intelligence? We never consider how often we use its tools in our daily routine. The simplest example is the language translation. AI-powered language translation apps and services facilitate communication by instantly translating text or speech. It makes it easier to interact with people from diverse linguistic backgrounds. 

Almost everyone applies assistants like Siri or Google Assistant to help users with tasks such as setting reminders, checking the weather, or playing music. And the same story is about retail and AI chatbots. Recommendation engines improve customer service and optimize product offerings. 

Also, I take into account more global issues such as manufacturing and security. Because AI-driven robots and automation systems streamline production processes, increasing productivity and quality control in manufacturing industries. AI-based surveillance systems detect anomalies, identify threats, and prevent cybersecurity breaches, safeguarding both physical and digital assets. 

Therefore, returning to the main question, I want to note that AI is widely used in education. In fact, for a long time, I thought that the era of AI spread after the invention of «Chat GPT» and hype began with education reform.

Historical Aspects

After examining its history, I acquired a lot of knowledge. The history of artificial intelligence can be traced back to the early 20th century, starting with the depiction of the heartless Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, which served as an early experimental model for human-controlled interfaces. 

Alan Turing, a young British polymath in the 1950s, explored the mathematical possibilities of AI and proposed that humans use available information to solve problems and make decisions, leading to the question of why machines couldn’t do the same. 

In 1970, Marvin Minsky predicted that within three to eight years, we would have machines with the general intelligence of an average human being. Fast forward to 1997, speech recognition software developed by Dragon Systems was successfully implemented on Windows. 

Nowadays, after the release of «Chat GPT» it has reached 100+ million active users. Interest in Al tools is growing faster than ever before. People are divided into 2 types. 

The first underestimates the possibilities of the real impact of artificial intelligence and considers it a temporary “hype”, and the second dramatizes the power of change, believing that AI is about to “take over everything in the world”. 

So, after telling a lot of examples associated with AI I decided to consider how AI affects on education from the first person.

Is AI enhancing human potential or replacing human ingenuity?

Without departing from history AI appeared in my life precisely in order to facilitate the writing of works, tests, etc.

That is why the first advantage is student support services. AI chatbots provide on-demand academic support, guidance, and counseling to students outside of traditional classroom hours. Chatbots answer frequently asked questions, offer study tips, and provide emotional support which promotes the well-being of students who can focus their attention on tasks that require creative and critical thinking.

The second one is personalized learning. Education platforms analyze student learning styles, preferences, and performance data to deliver a personalized learning experience. 

Adaptive learning systems adjust the content, pace, and level of difficulty according to the individual needs of the student, ensuring optimal engagement and mastery of concepts. These systems offer instant feedback, identify weaknesses, and adapt learning strategies to address individual learning gaps, thereby improving comprehension and retention.

I would not like to admit it, but the third advantage is automated grading. AI algorithms automate the grading process for assignments, tests, and exams, saving teachers time and effort.

I don’t forget the fact that teaching is difficult both mentally and physically. The teachers create plans and tasks for the kids to be interested in education. AI tools analyze large amounts of educational data, including student performance indicators, attendance records, and other information. 

Educators use insights from data analytics to identify trends, evaluate instructional effectiveness, and make data-driven decisions to improve learning outcomes. AI creates learning content, such as tests, study guides, and lesson plans, based on curriculum standards and learning objectives. 

In addition, AI-based recommendation systems offer relevant learning resources, textbooks, and supplemental materials tailored to students’ interests and knowledge levels which allows teachers to focus on the emotional state of children.

Overall, the integration of artificial intelligence into education has the potential to improve the effectiveness of learning but at this stage don’t forget about the shortcomings. 

As I know artificial intelligence works based on data previously loaded into the system and past experience. Al can perform the same task repeatedly. But if we need to make any adjustments or improvements, we ought to manually change the system code. Artificial intelligence cannot be accessed and used in the same way as human intelligence. On the other hand, it can store an infinite amount of data.

Educational AI Tools

Furthermore, an over-reliance on AI-driven educational tools and platforms can reduce opportunities for meaningful human interaction between students and teachers. Human connection, empathy, and personalized mentoring are integral aspects of the learning process that AI cannot fully replicate, potentially resulting in a less engaging and fulfilling educational experience. 

Relying solely on AI-driven solutions can hinder the development of essential cognitive and social skills necessary for lifelong learning and adaptation in a rapidly evolving world. 

It can not be silent about the fact that AI systems in education often collect and analyze sensitive student data, raising concerns about data leakage and unauthorized access. Vulnerabilities in the cyber security system can expose the personal information of students.

For the fourth time, access to AI-based educational resources and technological infrastructure is unequal across socio-economic groups and geographic regions, exacerbating disparities in educational opportunities and widening the digital divide. Students may face barriers to access to cool gadgets that hinder their academic progress and social mobility.

How Can Teachers Use Those AI Tools?

Returning to teachers, it can be noted that the automation of certain educational tasks with the help of artificial intelligence can lead to the displacement of teachers and support staff in education. 

While AI can streamline administrative processes and assessment tasks, it can also contribute to workforce restructuring and job insecurity in the education sector, requiring retraining and upskilling initiatives to mitigate the impact on employment.

Wrapping Up

In summary, artificial intelligence provides numerous benefits in education, including personalized learning, increased efficiency, and expanded access to educational resources. 

However, it also raises issues such as bias, privacy issues, and potential job displacement. Striking a balance between harnessing the benefits of artificial intelligence and addressing its shortcomings requires careful consideration of ethical standards in the use of AI to ensure equitable, inclusive, and effective educational practices. 

Therefore, after solving these issues, I will confidently lean towards the option that includes the presence of AI in our education.
